All-natural, homemade face wash

We all know that it is important to eat right and exercise, but did you know that chemicals also play a major role in your health? Creating a healthy home by reducing the toxins we use is a priority for my wife and I.

For the past few years, we've been using up the products we have and replacing them with less toxic alternatives. Typically, we use Burt's Bees face wash, a brand known for being all-natural. But after trying oil as face wash for the past six weeks, it is all we use now.

  

Most people are surprised to learn that I wash my face with oil, especially since people usually want to reduce oily skin. But it isn't the oil that causes breakouts; hormones, stress and the foods you eat cause pimples. When your skin is too dry, it will produce more oil overcompensating and causing breakouts. Washing your face with oil protects your body's natural oil restoring balance to your skin.

  

Oil face wash

To make: determine what ratio is best for you, as shown below, of castor oil and extra-virgin olive oil (evoo) which can be found at your local grocery store or health food store. Castor oil helps clean your skin and olive oil is a great moisturizer and is very nourishing for your skin.  

• For dry skin, use one part castor oil to three parts evoo
• For normal skin, use two parts castor oil and one part evoo 
• For combination skin, use two parts castor oil and one part evoo 
• For acne-prone or oily skin, use three parts castor oil to one part evoo

I mix enough to fill a 3 oz. squeeze bottle and shake it before I use it.

To use: Gently rub in and massage approximately a quarter-size amount of face wash on dry skin. You can steam your skin by placing a warm, damp washcloth over your face for about a minute.
  

Rinse out your washcloth, gently wipe the oil off and rinse your face a few times.

I only wash my face at night, and just rinse my face in the morning if I need to. Both Jen and I have noticed a difference in our skin and don't need to use moisturizer anymore.

We are also saving money as Burt's Bees face wash cost $2.00 per ounce and the oil face wash costs approximately $.68 per ounce.
